Club 21 Gallery

The Alpha Zone
PG.34 Seasoned tastemakers traverse the globe sourcing homewares, interior
accessories and artworks for Singapore’s Club 21 Gallery. Here are three of the brightest A+ artisans they found for 2009: Arca, Arik Levy and Anna Torfs

ARCA
Arca, established in 1958, is owned and run by the Guerra family from their studio in Ancona, Italy. This is where they create exquisite objects from cattle horn. Applying centuries-old techniques, they work the raw material over open fires to discover where the grain lies. They chisel then polish the outer husk to create items big and small – including this console, abat-jours, lighter and ashtray (pictured above and left).

ARIK LEVY
The creative credentials of this Paris-based Israeli designer include graphic communication, industrial, interior and exhibition design. For Gaia&Gino, Levy has created “Balance”, vessels suspended from an arch that are both vase and candleholder; and “Galactica”, an article punctuated with holes like a constellation of stars, suitable for the table or wall.

ANNA TORFS
Anna Torfs’ sensuous, modern glass artistry is grounded on the rich tradition of Bohemian glasswork. Originally from Belgium, Torfs was so beguiled by the Czech tradition that in 1994 she relocated to apprentice with Mittel Europe’s masters. Eight years later, she launched her own line. Shorn of decoration – as in the “Bombola” bowl and “Lente” vase pictured here – Torfs’
works resonate with authenticity.

Arca, Arik Levy for Gaia&Gino and Anna Torfs are available from Club 21 Gallery. Prices on request.
